Blackbirds, 2022

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is a critical wetlands area along the Rio Grande floodplain in central New Mexico where each winter thousands of Sand Hill Cranes, Snow Geese and a significant variety of other birds gather for the season, including Red-winged, Yellow-headed, and Brewer's Blackbirds. Certain species of birds, particularly during the winter months, congregate into large flocks that can soar and swirl around in the air, acting as a single unit, forming incredibly shapes that are in constant transformation. This behavior is referred to as "murmuration". At Bosque del Apache in December of 2021, me as a passive observer just sitting on the ground, these murmurating blackbirds swooped through and around me, the sound of their beating wings a loud, overwhelming auditory experience.
