Sockeye Salmon Katmai, 2022

from $75.00

LIMITED EDITION PRINT - I wouldn’t typically photograph a dead animal, but salmon are the keystone “circle of life” species.  We all know the story, right? After spending two or three years in the Pacific, they return to the spawning grounds where they were born, fighting upstream sometimes hundreds of miles, running the gauntlet of waterfalls and predators, to finally die once they have successfully spawned (or not, since they do not all make it).  This sockeye, and I am assuming it is a female, since it has not developed the grotesque features of the males, lays expired in the shallows of Moraine Creek in Alaska’s Katmai National Park.  Beautiful in life and in death, a symbol of that circle of life that drives life forward.
