Cub of the Year, 2024

from $75.00

LIMITED EDITION PRINT - Polar bear cubs spend two and half years, typically, with their mothers before they are forced out on their own.  During that time they need to learn all of the skills they will need to survive as adults.  This “Cub of the Year” is a first year cub, born in the spring earlier this year.  In Churchill, Canada, along the southwest shore of Hudson Bay, the polar bears spend up to half the year on land, waiting for the bay to freeze over.  This is a time of extreme fasting.  In early November, when this image was taken, they begin to gather near Hudson Bay, hungry, waiting for an opportunity to head out on to the ice to hunt their preferred diet of seals.
