Medora Mustang, Old Stallion 2023

from $75.00

LIMITED EDITION PRINT - Early morning in North Dakota’s Badlands, near Medora, a Mustang stallion looks out over the plains.  It is March and it has been a harsh winter, hard on this old horse.  The precursors to today’s modern horse originated in these plains over a million years ago, some migrating across the Bering Strait to establish population in Europe and Asia. Those that remained in North America were to go extinct shortly following the arrival of humans in North America some ten thousand years ago.  Wild horses in North America, like this Mustang, descended (in part) from the domesticated horses originally brought to America by the Spaniards in the 1500’s, thus closing a circle of sorts, and raising the hotly contested question of whether the Mustangs belong at all in the North American ecosystem.
